Day 83 – The Iron Gates

There was another flash flood last night and the road outside the apartment was soon under several inches of water.  It meant that we couldn’t eat our supper out on the terrace, with a view of the Danube, which was a shame!  We left at 6am to begin the climb up to the Iron Gates; this is the narrowest point of the Danube and is only 150 metres wide and is one of the most scenic parts of the Danube.   (more…)

Day 82 – The Man from Del Monte (well Belgrade actually!), he say “Yes”!

We were up at 4.30 to ensure we left the hostel by 5.15 to be at the bus depot for 5.30!  We wanted to be there when the bus came in to discuss with the driver the feasibility of taking our bikes on the coach.  Surprisingly, the answer was “yes”, without much deliberation either! (more…)

Day 81 – A Day in Belgrade

And we’ve certainly had lots of different smells through the various countries.  Whenever Rog and I have been on holiday somewhere and had a hire car with air-con, I’ve always said, “let’s turn off the air-con and open the windows because I want to smell the country and get a ‘feel’ for it”, so I really identify with this quote.
