Day 64 From One Wet Capital to Another!
As we cycled out of Vienna we noticed that the water level in the Danube looked very high; all the trees on the immediate bank and also the lower path were submerged as we’d had so much rainfall in the last 24 hours! An hour down the road and we had to take a detour (off the Danube cycle track that hugs the (more…)
Day 63 – Viewing Vienna
Interestingly, even though Vienna lies on the banks of the Danube, the city has no river front to add character and apparently never has. Instead, the Little Danube (a canal) flows through the centre of the capital. In the 19th Century (more…)
Day 62 – Krems to Vienna
We had a walk through the main streets of Krems this morning on our way to picking up the cycle route out of the town. Krems is regarded as the oldest city in lower Austria and is a maze of narrow, medieval (more…)
Day 61 – The Wachau
There was a fantastic firework display last night in Grein, not too sure what it was for, possibly some religious celebration? We were just getting off to sleep, when the huge bangs scared the ‘bejesus’ out of us, so we got out and had a look – fireworks for Rog and Dee, brilliant! (more…)
Day 60 -It’s a Goal!!
Day 59 – Beaver!
So, what has today brought us? We’ve had gorgeous yellow Iris dotted here and there along the banks of the Danube and continuous bird song all day; the occasional cuckoo and lots of blackbirds singing (more…)
Day 58 – 2000Km and the Danube!
Today whilst still in Germany we hit our 2000km Marker! We also started our cycle ride along the Danube, leaving Passau this morning. The Danube is very fast flowing and very wide. We’ve seen a (more…)
Day 39 – Our First Mountain Pass!
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” –Mark Twain
We left Camping Mexico in Bregenz, with a parting gift of 2 banana energy bars from Renata, the owner, which we knew would come in useful later on the hills! Renata has also introduced us to Austrian wine; as it was our day off, we had a lovely bottle of white wine called Gruner Veltliner, similar to the NZ Marlborough wines that I love! (more…)
Day 38 – Calm Before the Hills!
Well we’ve enjoyed our day off, just vegging out in the sun! Yes, the cloud has gone and the sun has come out, although at times it is still quite chilly. We are back on Lake Constance in the town of Bregenz and came upon this camping – Camping Mexico, by chance. It is lovely here, very chilled out and relaxed. We’ve met a lovely couple from the Ukraine – Andriy and Oksana, they got married on April 21st and are on their Honeymoon; we hope they will come and visit when we return to the UK in 2 years!
We’ve made extra pasta this evening ready for our power snacks tomorrow when we are tackling the hills!
