(Year 2) Days 123 & 124 – Rollercoaster Ride and On From KL

October 20, 2011 – 11:16 pm 2 Comments

Today, Thursday, another lazy day in KL; we made a trip out to Lake Titiwangsa and wished we hadn’t made the effort, as it wasn’t very special at all.    The only thing of interest today was Rog’s trip on the World’s largest indoor roller coaster!!  Yes, here in the Times Square Plaza, they have an indoor theme park!  Two goes on that and Hubby felt a tad sick!!

Friday and we are off heading towards Singers.   A very hilly day heading out through the suburbs of KL; we got away a little later, as we were a bit disorganised and then we were enjoying talking to a British family we met in the hotel (Tim, Binka and Miranda).  As always, cycling in the midday sun is not a good idea – we got hot and knackered fairly quickly with the sun and the hilly terrain.

As we poodled along a moped track adjacent to a busy expressway, we met a French cycling couple, Laure and Pierre, who are also on a RTW trip and have just completed what we are planning, as we’ve just completed where they are heading!!   We haven’t met cyclists for quite some time and so it was good to have a chat and exchange information – will be taking a look at their blog soon methinks, as we have plenty of decisions that we need to be making fairly soon.

We’ve found a cheap/tatty hotel in Dengkil – we haven’t come very far today only 40 something kilometres, but it has split the distance to Port Dickson where we are heading tomorrow.

(Year 2) Day 119 – Arriving in KL

October 16, 2011 – 11:02 pm 1 Comment

Breakfast today was a Roti Tissu in an Indian restaurant.  They are crispy pancake things full of sugar and are usually served as a desert.  They asked Rog if he wanted sauce with his and Rog’s face lit up, thinking of lemon juice etc., but the choice he was given was chicken or fish!!!   So he then quickly declined!  A good sugary start with strong, black coffee to start the day.   Malaysia is famous for its coffee – the beans are roasted with sugar, you just need to be careful if you ask for a coffee with milk, because it then comes extremely sweet as the milk is condensed milk!

Our road today from Kuala Selangor to KL took us through some extraordinary scenery, with our road meandering through acres and acres of palm oil plantations – as far as the eye could see.  It was really quite staggering.  The first palm oil plantation was in 1917 and Malaysia is now the world’s leading producer of palm oil.  Of course, it is the main culprit of de-forestation.  As if the scenery wasn’t enough, we then had hundreds of bikers passing the other way – an organised rally we guessed – they were just as impressed to see us judging from the number of ‘thumbs up’ that we got!!  Malaysia’s a great place to bike it seems – the roads are good, many people speak English, plenty of places to stay and things to visit, and, if you like curries, then it’s a bonus and a motorbiking holiday here would be a great couple of weeks spent.

Rog nearly got taken out today by a car – the second time he’s been in a ‘nearly’.  A few days’ ago leaving Ipoh a car overtook very quickly and then immediately turned left across Rog!  He and Big Boy turned left as well to avoid a collision and then he gave chase to the bad driver for a few hundred metres!  Today, about 10Kms out of KL we were on an extremely busy road and needed to move over to the left hand hard-shoulder – in effect cutting across a feeder lane from the left.  So Rog made a very clear indication of what he was doing, and this car just wouldn’t give and kept coming and coming and coming, and then, in a thrust of acceleration the car under-cut him!!  Very strange behaviour we think ………..  why he couldn’t ease up and let us proceed across and then accelerate past us we have no idea!   We do think it is the strangest way of driving that we’ve encountered in Asia.   It seems that if they see a cyclist of a pedestrian they won’t ‘back-off’ or ease up on the acceleration.  We have both said though, that it does remind us of cycling in the UK, now that’s a scarey thought, and we used to be such good drivers in the UK didn’t we ………………. ??   Other than though we’ve had a good ride into KL.  It did start on a bit of a dicey, extremely busy main road  (4 lanes wide), and then we cycled up a steep bridge that wasn’t necessary, as all it did was do a U turn back on to the other side of the motorway!!  So, we just turned around and very carefully went back down (on the hard shoulder obviously) to where we’d joined it and then found the way we should have gone – a side road off to one side and hidden from view!!   That’s the problem with the GPS sometimes, it is difficult to follow/read when you are in very built up areas with spaghetti type junctions all around.  Rog then reprogrammed the GPS and we came through a couple of quiet business parks (it is a Sunday) so that was good and then onto another busy road, but a prettier one.  We soon turned off this through a very exclusive residential area – OK YAR !!   and this was very good cycling.  This then pitched us onto another road and down into the middle of the city, where we were about 3kms from our chosen hotel.  This is a hotel that was a recommendation from an Aussie couple we met in Langkawi – it is called the Classic Inn and is very central and very friendly.   Upon our way in, there was a road cycle race in progress – I think Big Boy was itching to join in!!

Out for a western dinner tonight, (sorry folks, but we do miss our steak and wine!!!).  Then, so exhausted home and I was asleep in minutes – yesterday has caught up with me, in fact the 4 days have been long days – 270Kms in 3 days, that’s alot for this middle-aged couple ……….. !

Today we’ve done Kuala Selangor to KL and it was a hot, but interesting 72Kms …………
