Rog’s Ramblings #6

April 20, 2010 – 4:10 pm 3 Comments

Uphill from the campsite!  Asked directions and got sent the wrong way – Mental Note “use the straight road!”.  Boohoo, the Abbey d’Orval, does not have a bar!!!  Every village is closed – so no food – Mental Note #2 “get up earlier so that the shops are open when we are hungry!”  Got the packing  down to 2 hours, not bad when it is only 6 degrees C, when we get up at 8am and the tent is covered in frost!  Finally found food but it cost us 23.50 euros!  Mental Note #3 “buy more snack food”.  What stupid idiot builds a campsite at the top of a hill?  Never mind it’s got free wifi and hot water – God, we are so easily pleased!

Well country number 4 today, Luxembourg, and the big difference is how shit the drivers are!  Just like back home!  Already we miss the relaxed, courteous French and Belgique road manners!  Another camp and another hill!!!

Day 19 – The Tortoise!

April 19, 2010 – 3:32 pm 3 Comments

Rog came up with the great idea of using our additional groundsheet, as an extra layer on the tent at night.  We did have a much warmer night, but think it was a higher temperature as well.  We’ve done the same for tonight as well, as every layer helps.  However, I didn’t have a good night’s sleep, as I somehow or other, got very mixed up in my sleeping bag!  I am what Rog calls a ‘windmill’ sleeper, I flail around (more…)

Day 18 – The Bottle of Bubbles!

April 18, 2010 – 11:03 pm 2 Comments

“Too often. . .I would hear men boast of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.” – Louis L’Amour

Yes, today marks the start of another week – week 3 for us!  Thought we’d start the week with this very (more…)

Day 17 – Joie de Vivre

April 17, 2010 – 11:28 pm 8 Comments

Another cold night! But what a beautiful setting we woke to; Camp Maka is a really lovely place to holiday.  Ideal for families, who like the outdoor life; walking, cycling and kayaking.   We’d ordered baguettes and pain-au-chocolate via the camp and they were wonderful to tuck into this frosty morning; the pain-au-chocolates were still lovely and fresh; the soft, warm chocolate filling (more…)

Day 16 – Deja Vu

April 16, 2010 – 11:00 pm 6 Comments

Last night we were at a camp site in the village of Bohan, on the river Semoy; we’d been following the river Meuse most of the day and after the Town of Montherme the Meuse turned South and we picked up the Semoy continuing East.  The lady here is very friendly and doesn’t speak any English so we had an (more…)

Day 15 – Boy Wonder!

April 15, 2010 – 1:13 pm 12 Comments

What a fab day’s cycling! Rog picked a fantastic route which took us through some dramatic forest scenery.  We had a small climb out of our camp site this morning and then the most fabulous downhill for about 2 miles.  Rog was tucked into his saddle with his arms in and his head low trying to get as much out of it as he could!   Of course, we knew there would be ‘payback’ for this superb freewheeling and it (more…)

Day 14 – Free Beer!

April 14, 2010 – 11:46 pm 3 Comments

This morning looking like a wild-woman from Borneo with my hair everywhere, (where I’d gone to bed with it wet and loose), and with clothes on that are a few days past their best, I ventured to (more…)

Day 13 – More Wind and It Isn’t Ours!!

April 13, 2010 – 3:28 pm 12 Comments
Madame’s blanket was a Godsend; we slept like babies cacooned in the furry pile and didn’t want to face the new day!.  However, the sun was shining and it was promising to be much warmer than the day before, so we eventually emerged, breakfasted and then began to break camp.

What a gorgeous morning we’ve had; we’ve travelled through some really wonderful countryside, rolling hills, undulating roads, and some very typical French farms and villages, where life doesn’t appear to have changed much for hundreds of years.  This is the cycling we want and enjoy; unfortunately though, no-one has turned the wind off, and today the head wind has been stronger than ever!! So, we have finished today with both us, once again, absolutely pooped!

Today we had our first lot of frites accompanied by biere and what a huge portion of frites they were!  As we tucked hungrily into them, into the restaurant came a family who had 3 children, about a year between each of them, all 3 were sucking noisily and messily on dummies (yuk!); it reminded me of the Baby in the Simpsons, but in triplicate!  They were looking strangely at us, afterall, who would want to be tugging that lot along with headwinds like this?! And, we were looking strangely at them, thinking, what a handful, 3 under-4 year olds, all wet, noisy and slimey!!

We came across a lovely holiday village – “Val Joly” (North East France, in the Ardennes), a great place for family holidaying; self-catering cabins, beautifully situated around a huge lake, with cycle tracks, and beautiful countryside to explore.  We were able to meander our way through it, which gave us a welcome break from the road.  I wanted to stop there and just pitch our tent; I don’t think I realised that we had another 15 miles to go battling the dreaded Vents!

We’ve had a couple of firsts today; the drapolene cream has been out for the first time …………… !!   Also the tow rope has made an appearance!   With such strong head winds, we lashed me to Roger in order to keep me on his back wheel, it worked for a while, but we need to practise the downhill bits a little more!

We’ve changed our route slightly, mainly because of the headwind.  We aren’t making as much progress as we’d like, and we want to reach Rog’s Dad and Verena, in Munich in the next 3 weeks.  Therefore, we are not heading down through France to Switzerland, but, instead, we will be heading straight to Munich via Belgium and Luxembourg.  Today, we made it to Belgium and we are now in the town of Chimay, famous for its beer!  The last 10 miles here were the toughest of the trip yet!  The wind was so strong, that, it was a battle to keep the bikes on the road, and it felt like we were turning our pedals in treacle.  To make matters worse we were on a busy main road complete with lots of lorries.  So we were being ‘beaten up’ head on and then buffeted from side to side by lorries passing on both directions!  Lots of fun ……………….. NOT!
