Day 5 – Leaving Blightey!

April 5, 2010 – 11:00 pm 5 Comments

A very cold night last night; we are both struggling with staying warm at the moment, I think we’re just wimpy and perhaps need to harden up!!!  Today we’ve travelled through Hythe, Seaview, Folkstone and on to Dover.  We’ve seen some lovely Victorian seaside terraced houses nestled on the hills around Folkstone,  and also some larger mansions that are now rather grand B&Bs or Hotels.   We’ve had a fantastic tail wind today, and we’ve stuck to the coastal A20 road, which, at times as been a tad hilly – the hill out of Folkstone was a bugger!!  The memorable moments of each day, seem to be centered around food!!!  Today we found a burger van in a B&Q car park in Folkstone, run by Sarah; we had a great Quarter Pounder which filled a big hole!!  Along the way we stopped to pop into a shop and Rog rested his sunglasses on the trailer.  We then continued a mile up the road, only for Rog to remember his glasses and discover they were no longer sat on the trailer!  So back he had to go, thinking they would be squashed in the road somewhere.  As he neared the place where we’d stopped,  a large Double Decker sailed past and he really thought if his glasses were in the road, they’d be gonners!!  But, they weren’t, they’d fallen off the trailer into the gutter and not out into the road!     Then onwards out of Folkstone up a really awful hill, that Rog managed to cycle up and I had to walk (not sure which is worse actually!!).

Then onwards to Dover.  We picked up our first Puncture just outside Dover L   We think it was possibly a thorn from the campsite that caused it, and as we were going downhill I didn’t feel in control of Sally and by the end of the downhill I had a flat rear!

A lovely 5 mile ride in to Dover, along a cinder path, hugging the coastline; great views to our right of the sea and beautiful flowering gorse either side of the path.  The sun is shining and we are bowling along with a great tailwind, if only every day could be like this!!   Then, before us, the White Cliffs of Dover, a great sight, as we were beginning to feel like we would be cycling around Kent for a few more days/months yet!!!

Day 4 – Easter Sunday and We are Staying Put!!

April 4, 2010 – 11:21 pm No Comments

It’s Sunday, the start of the week, so here’s your Weekly Quote:-

When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” – Susan Heller

Unfortunately, Rog and I didn’t do that ……………..  hence why we are shattered and today feel the need to have a day off!!

Had a cosy night and woke to more howling wind and rain!  There is an indoor swimming pool here at the New Beach Camp Site, so we headed straight for there.  Our legs are heavy and aching and even walking is an effort.

We caught up with the washing  and also with email, but that’s about it for the day.

A marvellous sunset, but unfortunately too cold to really enjoy it!   We were puffing dragon;s breath under the Arc Tarp Tent Extension when we were cooking our supper!!.

Day 3 – Supper in Dymchurch

April 3, 2010 – 11:45 pm 9 Comments

A cosier night was spent last night!  It was a cold night, but we were wrapped up in extra layers, both with socks and hats on; not conducive to any romance I can tell you!!

Woke this morning early and packed up in the dry Hoorah!   However it’s only 7.30am and we’ve already (more…)

Day 2 – Wet, Wet, Wet!!

April 2, 2010 – 11:15 pm No Comments

So, we went to bed with an owl hooting and woke up to the sound of a very noisy woodpecker; it’s lovely being so close to nature and one of the reasons we wanted to do the trip. What wasn’t so nice, was having a very cold night! We hadn’t put extra layers on and should have! I didn’t have socks or a hat on and (more…)

DAY 1 – Two April Fools – The Biggest April Fool’s Joke Ever!!

April 1, 2010 – 3:03 am 12 Comments

Well, This Is It!!!   The sun  is shining and us 2 April Fools are off on their amazing adventure!!

‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ Confucius

Or  in our case a Journey of 24 Thousand Miles begins with a very wobbly, slow bike ride!!

A fantastic first day.  Lots of our friends arrived at the shop for our 11am send off and a photographer from the local newspaper turned up!  The reporter called Rog yesterday and did an ‘interview’ over the phone and then Osman arrived today to take lots of piccies!!   We did mention (more…)
