(Year 2) Day 25 – Saigon, Here We Come!

July 14, 2011 – 11:53 pm 2 Comments

Well, I got my lie-in here in Vung Tau and also a bacon breakfast!  The French started coming to Vung Tau in 1890, it was known to them as Cap St. Jacques and today it is still very busy with Westerners. Plenty of hotels and western foods here.  Vung Tau is set on a peninsula and is an easy boat ride from HCMC (Saigon), for those wanting to swim or have some R&R away from the crazy city!

We’ve had a very lazy morning, and all we’ve done is to cycle up to the end of the Peninsula to see the large Jesus statue, (Rio de Vietnam, as it’s known), which is 32 metres tall and stands on Mount Nho.  It has 133 steps inside to give you a fantastic view, but we didn’t check it out – both knackered from yesterday.

Tickets for the hydrofoil were $10 each and then $10 for each bike.  They certainly aren’t designed to take bikes and so, it seems to be at the discretion of the Captain.  We got ‘bumped’ from the 2pm to the 2.30pm and I was thinking “of great here we go”, I can see we’ll be cycling to Saigon shortly (Ms. Doom and Gloom me!).  However, they helped us on and off we went across the open sea to then take the inlet that leads all the way up to Saigon; the ride was 1 ½ hours and was 75Kms.  We met a delightful, little girl (Chau), on the ferry, who spoke excellent English and, who kept us entertained with the games on her Ipad!

Once unloaded it was off into the melee of Saigon to try and find a hotel- as you’d imagine there are hundreds, the problem is sometimes finding what you want, at the price you want.  We’ve found one right in the middle of the ‘happening’ area, and so we step out of our hotel into the madness and fun straight away!
